At which place did the first revelation (Wahi) descend upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ?

The first revelation (Wahi) was sent to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the Hira Cave, located on the Mountain of Noor (Jabal al-Nour) near Makkah. This historic event marks the beginning of the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ and the commencement of the Qur’anic revelation, which continued for approximately 23 years.

The Prophet ﷺ used to retreat to Hira Cave for meditation and reflection, away from the social and moral corruption prevalent in Makkah. During one of these periods of solitude, Angel Jibreel (AS) appeared to him and revealed the first verses of the Qur’an, which are from Surah Al-‘Alaq (96:1–5). The initial command of the revelation was “Iqra’” (Read/Recite), emphasizing the importance of knowledge, reflection, and learning in Islam.

This event was extremely significant because it marked the transition of the Prophet ﷺ from being a contemplative individual to a Messenger of Allah, tasked with conveying the divine guidance to all humanity. Initially, Prophet ﷺ was overwhelmed and concerned about the experience, but his wife, Hazrat Khadijah (RA), reassured him and supported him, strengthening his resolve to accept the mission.

The choice of Hira Cave as the site of the first Wahi carries deep symbolic meaning. It was a secluded, quiet place, ideal for spiritual reflection, and away from worldly distractions, which highlights the importance of contemplation and readiness to receive divine guidance. This event also teaches Muslims the value of patience, reflection, and seeking closeness to Allah.
