Aswad al-Ansi was a false prophet who arose in Yemen during the final year of Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) life, attempting to lead the people away from Islam. His real name was Abhala bin Ka’ab, but he was widely known as Aswad al-Ansi. He claimed prophethood and sought to seize control over Yemen, taking advantage of the political uncertainty and tribal rivalries of the region. Aswad al-Ansi’s rebellion included the assassination of the local governor appointed by Muslims, widespread deception, and the encouragement of idol worship, which created confusion and turmoil in Yemen.
The leadership of Yemen at the time was heavily impacted by Aswad’s claims, but his tyranny was short-lived. He was ultimately killed by Qais bin Abdu Yagoos, a man from his own tribe who opposed his unlawful actions and recognized the danger he posed to the people and Islam. Qais’s act restored order in Yemen and reaffirmed loyalty to the true teachings of Islam. The death of Aswad al-Ansi demonstrates how tribal loyalty and moral courage were instrumental in countering false prophets during early Islamic history.
