Masjid Quba is one of the most honored and historically significant mosques in Islam, and its mention in the Holy Qur’an appears in Surah At-Taubah. This makes it one of the few mosques directly acknowledged in the Qur’anic revelation. Masjid Quba holds a unique place in Islamic tradition because it was the first mosque ever built in Islamic history. When Prophet Muhammad (SAW) migrated from Makkah to Madinah during the Hijrah, he arrived first at the place known today as Quba. There, he personally laid the foundation of this sacred mosque before continuing his journey to the city of Madinah.
Surah At-Taubah highlights Masjid Quba as a mosque founded upon piety (taqwa) from the very first day. This Qur’anic praise distinguishes it from the “Masjid-e-Zarar,” which was built with harmful intentions. Through this comparison, Allah emphasizes the moral and spiritual importance of building places of worship upon sincerity, righteousness, and obedience to Allah. The verses encourage believers to recognize the value of worship spaces that uphold purity, unity, and sincerity in their purpose.
Masjid Quba also carries great spiritual rewards. According to authentic Hadith, the Prophet (SAW) said that performing two raka’ahs of prayer in Masjid Quba earns a reward equal to performing one Umrah. This remarkable virtue reflects the mosque’s blessed status and continues to attract Muslims from across the world. Today, millions of visitors who travel to Madinah make it a priority to visit Masjid Quba and perform prayers there, following the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW).
