Who is the gatekeeper of Hell in Islam?

In Islamic teachings, Malik is appointed by Allah as the gatekeeper of Hell (Jahannam). His primary responsibility is to guard the entrance of Hell and ensure that its inhabitants remain confined as a punishment for their disobedience and sins. The role of Malik is explicitly mentioned in the Quran: “And We have appointed over it [Hell] guardians (Malik)…” (Surah Al-Muddaththir, 74:30–31). This emphasizes that Malik’s authority and duty are divinely mandated, reflecting the structured and just system of the afterlife in Islam.

Malik’s presence in Hell serves as a warning for humanity about the consequences of persistent wrongdoing and rebellion against Allah. He does not have any power to show mercy, as his role is purely custodial and administrative within the bounds of divine decree. Islamic scholars explain that Malik’s unwavering vigilance ensures that the punishments of Jahannam are carried out correctly, and none of its inmates can escape without Allah’s command.

It is important to distinguish Malik from Rizwan, who is the guardian of Paradise (Jannah), ensuring that the righteous and obedient believers enter safely. Malik, in contrast, is solely concerned with the punishment and supervision of Hell. This dual system underscores the balance in Islamic eschatology between reward for the obedient and consequences for the disobedient.
