The first institution of Islam was Suffah, established during the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Masjid-e-Nabawi (The Prophet’s Mosque) in Madinah. Suffah was a shaded platform attached to the mosque where the earliest Muslims, known as Ashab al-Suffah (People of the Bench), dedicated themselves to learning the Qur’an, Hadith, Islamic teachings, and religious practices directly from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

This institution became the first Islamic center for education and training, where poor and homeless companions were accommodated while focusing on Islamic studies and spreading the message of Islam. The Prophet (PBUH) personally supervised their education, teaching them the essentials of faith, recitation of the Qur’an, and practical implementation of Islamic values. Many of these students later became respected scholars, teachers, and preachers of Islam.

Suffah laid the foundation for future Islamic educational systems, including Madrasahs and centers of Islamic learning across the Muslim world. It shows the importance Islam gives to knowledge, teaching, and learning from the very beginning of its establishment.
