Talha ibn Ubaidullah (RA), one of the ten companions promised Paradise (Ashra Mubashra), earned the distinguished title “At-Taiyyar” or “The Living Martyr” after his heroic actions in Ghazwa-e-Uhud, the Battle of Uhud, which took place in 625 CE. During this battle, the Muslim army faced a powerful attack from the Quraysh, and the situation became extremely dangerous, especially for the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Talha (RA) displayed extraordinary courage, protecting the Prophet with unmatched bravery.
When the enemy forces attacked, Talha (RA) positioned himself around the Prophet (PBUH) and sustained severe injuries while shielding him from arrows and swords. He remained steadfast despite multiple wounds, embodying loyalty, courage, and selflessness. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) praised Talha (RA) for his sacrifice, and because he survived the battle despite his grave injuries, he was honored with the title “The Living Martyr” (At-Taiyyar)—symbolizing someone who has faced martyrdom in spirit and action but continues to live. This title highlights the profound respect for those who defend Islam and protect the Prophet (PBUH) at great personal risk.
