In Islamic law, Zakat is a fundamental pillar of Islam, designed to purify wealth and help the needy. It applies not only to money, crops, and trade goods, but also to livestock, including camels. The Nisab refers to the minimum number or value of an asset that makes a person liable to pay Zakat. For camels, the Nisab is 5 camels, meaning a person must own at least five camels to be required to pay Zakat.
The amount of Zakat due depends on the size of the herd:
5–9 camels → 1 sheep
10–14 camels → 2 sheep
15–19 camels → 3 sheep
20–24 camels → 4 sheep
…and it increases progressively for larger herds. These rulings are based on Hadith and the practices of the early Islamic community.
The purpose of Zakat on camels is not only religious but also social and economic. Camels historically represented wealth and means of transportation, so taxing them fairly ensured redistribution of resources, support for the poor, and societal balance. Paying Zakat purifies the owner’s wealth and strengthens community welfare.
