The Quran was not revealed as one complete book at a single time. Instead, its verses and chapters were revealed gradually according to different circumstances and needs. This gradual revelation helped the early Muslim community understand, remember, and practice the teachings of Islam.
The first revelation occurred when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was 40 years old. Angel Jibril (AS) brought the first verses of revelation to him in the Cave of Hira. These verses began with the command “Iqra”, meaning “Read” or “Recite.”
