Hazrat Bilal ibn Rabah (RA) is one of the most honored companions in Islamic history and is remembered as the first Mu’azzin (caller to prayer) of Islam. He was born into slavery in Makkah and belonged to an Ethiopian background. His master, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, was among the strongest opponents of Islam. When Hazrat Bilal (RA) accepted Islam, he was subjected to severe torture and cruelty because of his faith.
Hazrat Bilal (RA) endured unimaginable suffering. He was dragged across hot sands, whipped, and heavy stones were placed on his chest under the burning sun. Despite this extreme persecution, his faith remained unshaken. He continued to repeat the words “Ahad, Ahad” (Allah is One), which became a powerful symbol of unwavering belief and patience.
Seeing his condition, Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (RA), one of the closest companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the first Caliph of Islam, intervened. Motivated by compassion, justice, and faith, Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) purchased Hazrat Bilal (RA) from his cruel master and set him free. This act was not driven by personal interest or social status but purely for the sake of Allah. The Qur’an itself refers to this noble act in Surah Al-Lail, praising those who spend their wealth to purify themselves.
After gaining freedom, Hazrat Bilal (RA) became a prominent figure in Islam. He was honored by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with the responsibility of calling the Adhan, making his voice a lasting symbol of Islamic worship. His life demonstrates Islam’s firm stance against oppression, racism, and injustice, emphasizing equality among believers regardless of color or background.
