What is the color of the Hajar-e-Aswad (Black Stone)?

The Hajar-e-Aswad, or Black Stone, is a sacred stone set in the eastern corner of the Kaaba in Masjid al-Haram, Makkah. Its color is black, as its name suggests. The stone holds deep spiritual and historical significance in Islam, and it is revered by Muslims around the world. While performing the Hajj or Umrah, pilgrims attempt to kiss, touch, or point towards the Hajar-e-Aswad as part of the ritual of Tawaf (circumambulating the Kaaba), following the practice of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

According to Islamic tradition, the Hajar-e-Aswad was originally white when it descended from Paradise but turned black due to absorbing the sins of humanity over time. Scholars emphasize that the stone itself is not an object of worship; rather, it serves as a symbol and a physical point of connection with the Prophetic tradition. It is believed to have been present during the time of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) when he and his son Hazrat Isma’il (A.S.) rebuilt the Kaaba.

The Hajar-e-Aswad also serves as a marker to begin and end the circumambulation of the Kaaba, and pilgrims often express their devotion and respect through their gestures toward it. Its black color distinguishes it clearly from the surrounding walls of the Kaaba and makes it easily recognizable during rituals.
