Prophet Yunus (A.S.), also known as Jonah in other traditions, is a well-known prophet in Islam whose story teaches lessons of patience, repentance, and reliance on Allah. One of the most famous events of his life is when he was swallowed by a great fish, often described as a whale, as a divine test. This event is mentioned in the Qur’an in multiple verses, including Surah As-Saffat (37:139-148) and Surah Al-Anbiya (21:87-88), highlighting the miraculous nature of Allah’s protection and guidance.
The story begins when Prophet Yunus (A.S.) was sent to guide the people of Nineveh. Faced with their persistent rejection of his message, he became despondent and left his mission without Allah’s permission. As a consequence, he was swallowed by a huge fish, where he remained in its belly for a period of time. Inside the darkness of the fish, Prophet Yunus (A.S.) sincerely repented to Allah, saying the famous prayer: “La ilaha illa Anta, subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimeen” (“There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers”).
Allah accepted his repentance and commanded the fish to release him, demonstrating that divine mercy and forgiveness are available to those who turn back to Allah sincerely. Prophet Yunus (A.S.)’s experience teaches Muslims the importance of patience, steadfastness, and trust in Allah during trials. The event also symbolizes that no matter how dire circumstances appear, Allah’s help and guidance can deliver believers from any hardship.
