Namaz-e-Istisqa is offered for which purpose?

Namaz-e-Istisqa, also known as Salat-ul-Istisqa, is a special prayer in Islam that is offered to seek rainfall from Allah during times of drought, water shortage, or prolonged dry conditions. The word “Istisqa” comes from the Arabic root “saqa,” which means “to give water” or “to irrigate.” This prayer reflects the deep belief in Islam that all natural resources, including rain, are under the command of Allah, and that humans should turn to Him in humility and repentance during times of hardship.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) practiced this prayer and taught the companions to perform it when the community faced drought. It is usually performed in an open area, much like the Eid prayer, and includes two units (rak‘at) of prayer followed by a khutbah (sermon). During the supplication, the Imam raises his hands and makes heartfelt dua, asking Allah to send beneficial rain for people, animals, and crops. One distinctive sunnah practice is turning the cloak or shawl inside out during the khutbah, symbolizing a change in the difficult situation.

Namaz-e-Istisqa is not related to eclipses or diseases. The prayers offered during a solar or lunar eclipse are different and are called Salat-ul-Kusuf and Salat-ul-Khusuf. Similarly, during times of illness or pandemics, Muslims are encouraged to make general dua and seek protection through other prayers, not Istisqa.
