The Holy Qur’an provides a complete guidance for human life, including personal, social, economic, and family matters. One of the most important aspects of social life is marriage, which establishes the foundation of a healthy family system. The Surah that specifically addresses the laws of marriage is Surah An-Nisa (Chapter 4 of the Qur’an).
Surah An-Nisa is a Madani Surah and has 176 verses. The word “An-Nisa” means “Women,” and the Surah is largely devoted to outlining women’s rights and family-related laws. Among its subjects are marriage regulations, inheritance laws, responsibilities of husbands and wives, and the importance of justice within family relationships.
Lawful and Unlawful Marriages: It specifies which relationships are prohibited for marriage (mahram relations).
Polygamy Regulations: It permits marrying up to four wives but only on the condition of absolute justice among them (Qur’an 4:3).
Women’s Rights: Emphasizes dowry (Mahr) as an obligatory gift to the bride.
Justice and Responsibility: Encourages men to fulfill their duties towards women with fairness and not to deprive them of their due rights.
Inheritance Laws: Clearly defines shares of inheritance for men and women, ensuring justice in wealth distribution.
