In Islamic theology, Hazrat Jibra’eel (AS), also known as Gabriel in English, is considered the chief of all angels. His primary and most significant function is to serve as the divine intermediary between Allah (SWT) and the human messengers chosen to guide mankind. This role, known as Risalah (the communication of the message), makes him the Archangel of Revelation.
The Holy Quran refers to Hazrat Jibra’eel (AS) by several prestigious titles that highlight his purity and strength. He is called Ruh al-Amin (The Trustworthy Spirit) and Ruh al-Qudus (The Holy Spirit). These titles signify that the messages he carried were never altered, corrupted, or delayed; he delivered the exact Word of God to the Prophets with absolute precision. His strength is also mentioned in the Quran, where he is described as Dhu Mirrah (possessor of great power) and Shadid al-Quwa (terrible in power).
The most famous aspect of his duties was the revelation of the Holy Quran to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). This process began in 610 CE in the Cave of Hira, where Jibra’eel (AS) appeared with the first five verses of Surah Al-Alaq. For a period of 23 years, he continued to descend from the heavens to deliver the Quranic verses in stages. Beyond just delivering the text, Jibra’eel (AS) would also review the Quran with the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) every year during the month of Ramadan to ensure its perfect preservation in the hearts of the believers.
The duty of Hazrat Jibra’eel (AS) was not limited to the final Prophet. He was the constant companion of all major messengers throughout history.
Hazrat Ibrahim (AS): He appeared to Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) during several trials, including the time he was thrown into the fire.
Hazrat Musa (AS): He provided support and guidance during the exodus from Egypt.
Hazrat Isa (AS): He was sent to Hazrat Maryam (AS) to announce the miraculous birth of Hazrat Isa (AS) and continued to strengthen him throughout his ministry.
While his main function was revelation, Hazrat Jibra’eel (AS) also acted as a protector for the Prophets under Allah's command. During the Battle of Badr, Islamic tradition holds that Jibra’eel (AS) led a host of angels to assist the Muslim army against the Quraysh. He was also the companion of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) during the Isra wal Mi'raj (The Night Journey and Ascension to the Heavens), guiding him through the various celestial spheres until they reached the Sidrat al-Muntaha (The Lote Tree of the Furthest Boundary).
As the leader of the celestial host, Jibra’eel (AS) oversees the implementation of Divine decrees on Earth that involve communication and spiritual guidance. His high status is so significant that the Quran mentions that whoever is an enemy to Jibra’eel is an enemy to Allah (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:97-98).
