What was the original name of Iblis?

Before Iblis became known as the one who refused to bow before Prophet Adam (AS), he was called Azazil. Islamic scholars mention that Azazil was among the most devoted worshippers of Allah. He lived among the angels, worshipped Allah for thousands of years, and was honored with great status due to his obedience. Even though he was not an angel—because angels are created from light while he was created from smokeless fire—his worship was so exceptional that he was allowed to remain in their company.

The name Azazil is often associated with purity and strength in worship. It reflects the high spiritual rank he once held. However, everything changed when Allah commanded the angels and jinn to bow before Adam (AS). This was not a bow of worship but a bow of respect, acknowledging Adam’s special creation and knowledge. While the angels obeyed immediately, Azazil refused. His heart filled with arrogance, and he believed he was superior because he was created from fire while Adam was created from clay.

This act of pride caused his downfall. Allah expelled him from His mercy, and from that moment, Azazil became known as Iblis, which means “the one in despair” or “the hopeless one.” His transformation from Azazil to Iblis is a powerful reminder of how arrogance destroys even the most devout worshippers.
