The blessed name “Muhammad” (SAW), which holds immense honor and respect across the world, was suggested by the Holy Prophet’s grandfather, Hazrat Abdul Muttalib. When Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was born, Hazrat Abdul Muttalib was overjoyed and personally took the newborn to the Kaaba, offering gratitude to Allah for the arrival of this blessed child. It was during this moment of gratitude that he chose the name “Muhammad,” a name rarely used among the Arabs at that time. The literal meaning of “Muhammad” is “the one who is highly praised”, a title that beautifully reflected the noble qualities the Prophet (SAW) would later embody.
Historical accounts mention that Hazrat Abdul Muttalib selected this unique name with the hope that his grandson would be praised both on earth and in the heavens. His choice was divinely guided, as the life of the Prophet (SAW) became a shining example of truth, mercy, justice, and compassion — qualities that earned him worldwide admiration. The Prophet (SAW) was later known by many titles such as Ahmad, Mustafa, and Al-Amin, but “Muhammad” became the most widely recognized and revered.
Hazrat Amina (RA), the Prophet’s mother, also received inspiration about the special nature of her child, but the formal naming was done by Hazrat Abdul Muttalib. This decision fulfilled ancient prophecies found in earlier scriptures, where the coming of a final messenger named “Muhammad” or “Ahmad” was foretold.
