Abd Ar Rehman Ad-Dakhil, also known as Abd al-Rahman I, was the founder and first ruler of the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba in Spain. He assumed power in 756 A.D after escaping the Abbasid overthrow of the Umayyad Caliphate in Damascus. His arrival in Al-Andalus marked the establishment of a strong and independent Muslim state in the Iberian Peninsula.

Born in 731 A.D, Abd Ar Rehman belonged to the Umayyad royal family. After the Abbasid Revolution in 750 A.D, which ended the Umayyad rule in the East, he fled across North Africa, eventually reaching Spain. Although he held the title of “Emir” and not “Caliph” during his lifetime, he was effectively the highest authority in Muslim Spain and laid the foundation for later Umayyad rulers to declare themselves Caliphs.
