The Waqia-e-Karbala is one of the most significant and tragic events in Islamic history. It took place on the 10th of Muharram, 61 AH (10 October 680 CE), in the land of Karbala, located near the Euphrates River in present-day Iraq.

This event is remembered as a defining moment for the Muslim Ummah because it highlighted the principles of truth, justice, and sacrifice. Hazrat Imam Hussain ibn Ali (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the son of Hazrat Ali (RA) and Hazrat Fatimah (RA), stood against the oppressive rule of Yazid ibn Muawiya, the then Umayyad ruler. Imam Hussain (RA) refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid because his rule was marked by tyranny, corruption, and deviation from the teachings of Islam.

When Imam Hussain (RA) and his family, along with about 72 loyal companions, reached the plains of Karbala, they were surrounded by Yazid’s army of thousands. For several days, they were denied access to water, leading to unbearable thirst and suffering, especially for the children. Despite this, Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions remained steadfast in their faith and principles.

On Ashura (10th Muharram), the final battle occurred. Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions fought bravely but were martyred one by one. Imam Hussain (RA) himself was brutally martyred, and his head was sent to Yazid in Damascus. The surviving women and children of Ahl al-Bayt, including Hazrat Zainab (RA), were taken captive.

The Battle of Karbala left a lasting legacy of sacrifice and resistance against oppression. It is commemorated annually by Muslims, especially in the form of Majalis and remembrance during the first 10 days of Muharram. For Shia Muslims, it is a central event of religious devotion, but even Sunni Muslims regard it as a moment of great sorrow and a lesson in standing for truth.
