During the historic Battle of the Trench (Ghazwa-e-Khandaq), the Muslims of Madinah faced a formidable confederation of enemies, including the Quraysh and other allied tribes, aiming to attack the city. In preparation for this defensive battle, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instructed the digging of a trench around Madinah to protect it from the invading army—a strategy suggested by Salman al-Farsi (RA). While the Prophet ﷺ personally oversaw the military preparations and the defense strategy, it was crucial to appoint a trustworthy and responsible individual to manage the affairs of Madinah in his absence.
The Prophet ﷺ appointed Ibn Umm Maktum (RA) as the supervisor (in-charge) of Madinah during this critical time. Ibn Umm Maktum (RA) was a blind companion of the Prophet ﷺ, yet highly respected for his knowledge, piety, and reliability. Despite his blindness, he was known for his keen sense of responsibility, fairness, and commitment to the welfare of the Muslim community. By assigning him this role, the Prophet ﷺ demonstrated that true leadership is based on trustworthiness, integrity, and competence rather than physical ability alone.
As the supervisor, Ibn Umm Maktum (RA) was responsible for maintaining order, ensuring the security of the city, and managing civic affairs while the Prophet ﷺ and the Muslim army defended the city at the trench. His role was pivotal in ensuring that the inhabitants of Madinah were safe and that essential governance continued smoothly during the siege.
