Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (R.A.), the cousin of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is widely regarded as the greatest scholar of the Quran among the companions. He was born in Mecca and was very young when he accepted Islam, yet he developed an extraordinary understanding of the Quran and Hadith. The Prophet (PBUH) himself praised his knowledge, referring to him as “Hibr-ul-Ummah” (the learned scholar of the Ummah) and “Tarjuman-ul-Quran” (interpreter of the Quran), highlighting his exceptional mastery in understanding and explaining the divine revelations.
Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (R.A.) dedicated his life to learning, teaching, and explaining the meanings of the Quran. He memorized vast portions of the Quran and was known for his ability to interpret complex verses with clarity, providing insights into legal, ethical, and spiritual matters. His expertise extended to explaining the reasons behind revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul) and guiding early Muslims on applying Quranic teachings in everyday life.
He also contributed significantly to Hadith scholarship, narrating thousands of Hadiths directly from the Prophet (PBUH) and providing context to help later generations understand Islamic law and practice. His students and subsequent generations relied on his knowledge, making him a key figure in the preservation and explanation of Islamic teachings.
