What is the meaning of Wahi (Divine Revelation)?

The word Wahi (وحی) in Islamic terminology refers to Divine Revelation, which is the process through which Allah communicates His guidance to His chosen prophets. Linguistically, Wahi conveys meanings such as inspiration, indication, or a swift and hidden form of communication. However, in Islam, its technical and most important meaning is the direct message sent by Allah to His messengers to guide humanity toward truth and righteousness.

The most significant example of Wahi is the revelation of the Holy Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad (SAW). This revelation began in the Cave of Hira when Angel Jibreel (AS) delivered the first verses of Surah Al-‘Alaq. Over a period of approximately twenty-three years, the Qur’an was revealed gradually, addressing spiritual, moral, social, and legal matters. This Divine Revelation forms the foundation of Islamic belief and practice.

Wahi was not limited to verbal messages only. It came in different forms, including direct inspiration into the heart of the Prophet (SAW), dreams that were clear and true, and messages delivered through Angel Jibreel (AS). Each form was precise, protected from error, and entirely from Allah, ensuring the authenticity of divine guidance.

Understanding the meaning of Wahi is essential in Islamic Studies because it explains how divine knowledge reaches humanity. Without Wahi, humans would rely solely on reason, which is limited and prone to error. Divine Revelation provides clarity, moral direction, and a complete way of life.
