The human backbone is called the vertebral column. It is made of 33 small bones. These bones are called vertebrae. They are placed one above the other from the neck to the lower back. The backbone helps us stand, sit, walk, and move. It also keeps our body straight and safe.
The 33 bones are divided into five parts:
Neck (Cervical) – 7 bones
Chest (Thoracic) – 12 bones
Lower back (Lumbar) – 5 bones
Hip area (Sacral) – 5 bones joined together
Tailbone (Coccygeal) – 4 bones joined together
Even though the last two parts have bones that are joined together, we still count all of them. So, the total number is 33.
The backbone also protects the spinal cord, which is a soft part inside the bones. The spinal cord carries messages between the brain and the body.
Knowing about the backbone is important because it is a very useful and strong part of the human body. It helps us do many things in daily life.
