The human heart is a muscular organ that works like a pump to circulate blood throughout the body. One of its key functions is to send deoxygenated blood to the lungs so it can pick up fresh oxygen. This process is essential for keeping our organs and tissues healthy and functioning properly.

Deoxygenated blood means blood that has already delivered its oxygen to the body and is now carrying carbon dioxide (CO₂), a waste gas. This blood enters the right atrium of the heart from the body through large veins. From there, it moves into the right ventricle, which then pumps it to the lungs through the pulmonary arteries.

In the lungs, this blood releases carbon dioxide and absorbs fresh oxygen during the breathing process. After that, it becomes oxygenated blood and returns to the heart’s left atrium. The heart then pumps it out through the left ventricle to supply oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body.

This oxygen exchange in the lungs is part of the pulmonary circulation system. Without this step, the body’s cells wouldn’t get the oxygen they need to survive.
