Alan Turing is regarded as the father of the modern digital computer because he established the theoretical principles that made programmable digital computers possible. In 1936, he introduced the concept of the Turing Machine, a mathematical model that demonstrated how a computer could execute instructions to solve different types of problems. This model became the basis of modern computing and continues to influence computer science today.
Although Charles Babbage designed the Analytical Engine, which introduced the basic architecture of a computer, his machine was mechanical and was never completed. For this reason, Babbage is commonly referred to as the Father of the Computer, whereas Alan Turing is widely associated with the modern digital computer because of his groundbreaking theoretical work.
Similarly, Blaise Pascal invented the Pascaline, an early mechanical calculator capable of performing arithmetic operations. However, it could not be programmed to execute multiple instructions like a modern computer. J. H. Muller also contributed to the development of calculating machines but is not credited with laying the foundation of modern digital computing.
