Extended Selection mode is a feature in Microsoft Word that allows users to select text by expanding the selection from the current cursor position. It can be useful when selecting large portions of a document without holding down the mouse button or repeatedly dragging across the text.
In MS Word, pressing F8 activates Extended Selection mode. After activating it, users can expand the selected text using the keyboard, navigation keys, or mouse. For example, pressing an arrow key can extend the selection in the corresponding direction. Repeatedly pressing F8 can also expand the selection to larger text units, such as a word, sentence, or paragraph, depending on the selection state.
However, users sometimes activate this mode accidentally and may notice that moving the cursor behaves differently than expected. To exit Extended Selection mode, they can press the Esc key. This cancels the extended-selection operation and returns Word to its normal editing behavior.
