Zakat was forbidden for the family of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, specifically the tribe of Banu Hashim. The Prophet ﷺ clearly stated that his family should not receive Zakat, as it is considered “the impurities of people’s wealth.” Zakat is a purification of wealth and is distributed to the needy among the general Muslim population, but the family of the Prophet ﷺ was honored and elevated above taking charity.
The prohibition is recorded in authentic Hadith found in Sahih Muslim and other collections. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Indeed, this charity is not appropriate for Muhammad or the family of Muhammad. It is only the impurities of the people." (Sahih Muslim)
Instead of Zakat, the Ahl al-Bayt (People of the House) were supported through other lawful means, such as Khumus (the fifth portion of war spoils) or other state-assigned support when applicable.
This ruling reflects the dignity and status of the Prophet’s household in Islam and ensures that charitable contributions (Zakat) remain for the general poor and underprivileged.
