The first translation of the Quran into any European language was carried out by Robert of Ketton, an English scholar and translator, in 1143 CE. This translation was done in Latin, the scholarly and ecclesiastical language of Europe at that time. Though the translation was completed in the 12th century, it was not printed until the year 1543.

The printed version appeared in Basel, Switzerland, under the title "Machometi Saracenorum principis eiusque successorum vita ac doctrina ipseque Alcoran," meaning "The Life and Doctrine of Muhammad, Leader of the Saracens, and of His Successors, and the Quran Itself."
