The Battle of Camel (Ma’rakat al-Jamal) took place in 36 A.H (656 CE) in Basra, Iraq. This was the first major internal conflict (Fitna) among Muslims after the assassination of Caliph Uthman ibn Affan (R.A). The battle was fought between the army of Caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib (R.A), the fourth rightly guided caliph, and the group led by Hazrat Aisha (R.A), supported by Hazrat Talha (R.A) and Hazrat Zubair (R.A).
The main cause of the battle was the demand for immediate justice against the assassins of Caliph Uthman (R.A). Hazrat Ali (R.A) intended to restore order in the Muslim state before taking action, whereas Hazrat Aisha (R.A) and her supporters insisted on swift retribution. This difference of approach resulted in armed conflict, later known as the Battle of Camel, named after the camel on which Hazrat Aisha (R.A) rode during the confrontation.
After the battle ended, Hazrat Ali (R.A) showed utmost respect to Hazrat Aisha (R.A) and personally arranged for her safe return to Madina, emphasizing Islamic ethics and unity despite political disputes.
