During the caliphate of Hazrat Usman ibn Affan (R.A), Islam had expanded rapidly beyond the Arabian Peninsula, reaching regions such as Iraq, Syria, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. As people of different tribes and dialects embraced Islam, variations in Qur’anic recitation (Qira’at) began to appear among Muslims in different territories.
Hazrat Hudhaifa bin Yaman (R.A), a respected companion and commander during the Islamic conquests, noticed disputes among Muslim soldiers regarding the proper pronunciation and recitation of the Qur’an during military campaigns. Concerned that these differences might lead to serious division among the Ummah, he urgently approached Caliph Usman (R.A) and advised him to unify the recitation based on the original compilation prepared during Abu Bakr’s era and preserved with Hafsa (RA), the wife of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Hazrat Usman (R.A) then ordered a committee under Zaid bin Thabit (R.A) to prepare official standardized copies of the Qur’an and dispatched them to major Islamic centers, such as Kufa, Basra, Damascus, and Makkah, ensuring one consistent version of the Holy Qur’an for all Muslims.
Person who advised: Hazrat Hudhaifa bin Yaman (R.A).
Reason: To prevent differences in Qur’an recitation among Muslims of various regions.
Caliph: Hazrat Usman ibn Affan (R.A), the 3rd Caliph of Islam.
Committee head: Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (R.A).
Action taken: Compilation and distribution of standardized copies of the Qur’an.
Preserved the authenticity and unity of Qur’anic text till today.
