A Munafiq (منافق) is a person who outwardly claims to be a Muslim—saying the Shahada and participating in Islamic practices—but secretly harbors disbelief or hatred towards Islam in their heart. Hypocrisy (nifaq) is one of the most dangerous spiritual diseases discussed in the Holy Quran, and Munafiqeen (plural of Munafiq) are strongly condemned by Allah.

Surah An-Nisa (4:145) says:
“Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire—and never will you find for them a helper.”
This ayah clearly reflects how severe the punishment is for hypocrisy in belief.

The concept of a Munafiq was especially relevant during the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, where some individuals in Madinah pretended to be Muslims to create internal conflict and harm the Muslim community from within. One well-known figure of hypocrisy was Abdullah ibn Ubayy.

It’s important to distinguish a Munafiq from a Kafir (disbeliever), Murtad (apostate), or Zindeeq (heretic). A Kafir openly denies Islam. A Murtad is someone who embraced Islam but later left it. A Zindeeq is someone who promotes heretical beliefs while still identifying as a Muslim. But a Munafiq deceives others by pretending to be a true believer while concealing disbelief.
