The marriage of Hazrat Khadija (RA) and Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is one of the most honorable and inspiring stories in Islamic history. Hazrat Khadija (RA), known as Tahira (the Pure), was a wealthy and respected businesswoman of Quraysh. She had employed Muhammad (SAW) for a trade caravan, and his honesty, truthfulness, and noble character deeply impressed her. Unlike other men of Quraysh, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) never indulged in dishonesty or immoral behavior.
After observing his noble conduct, Hazrat Khadija (RA) developed a deep respect for him and desired to marry him. Since proposing directly was not considered appropriate for women in Arab society, she sent her close and trusted friend, Nafisa bint Munya, to discreetly approach Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and discuss the matter of marriage.
Nafisa (RA) spoke to Prophet Muhammad (SAW), saying: “Why do you not marry?” The Prophet (SAW) replied that he did not have the financial means. Nafisa then asked, “If you were invited to wealth, beauty, and honor, would you accept it?” When the Prophet (SAW) asked who she meant, Nafisa mentioned Hazrat Khadija (RA).
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was pleased, as he too admired Hazrat Khadija (RA) for her piety, generosity, and noble character. He accepted the proposal, and soon after, their families formalized the blessed marriage. At the time, the Prophet (SAW) was 25 years old, and Hazrat Khadija (RA) was around 40.
Their marriage was filled with love, respect, and mutual support. Hazrat Khadija (RA) became the first believer in Islam and supported the Prophet (SAW) in the most difficult years of revelation and persecution. This union is considered one of the greatest examples of an Islamic marriage based on faith, trust, and sincerity.
