The Battle of Badr, fought on the 17th of Ramadan in the 2nd year after Hijrah (624 CE), is one of the most significant battles in Islamic history. This was the first major battle between the Muslims of Madinah, led by Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and the Quraysh of Makkah. Despite being outnumbered — with about 313 Muslims facing nearly 1,000 Quraysh warriors — the Muslims emerged victorious by the will of Allah.
This battle is called Yaumul Furqan, which means “The Day of Criterion”. The word Furqan signifies the criterion that separates truth from falsehood. The Qur’an itself refers to this event in Surah Al-Anfal (8:41): “…on the Day of Criterion, the day when the two armies met…”. This battle became a decisive turning point in Islamic history because it not only strengthened the morale of the Muslims but also proved that Allah’s help was with them.
Several miracles and divine supports were granted to the believers during Badr. The Qur’an mentions that Allah sent down angels to strengthen the Muslims and filled the hearts of the disbelievers with fear. The victory at Badr greatly enhanced the status of Islam in Arabia, showing that faith, discipline, and divine support could overcome numerical and material disadvantages.
The Battle of Badr also highlighted the sincerity of the companions (Sahaba), many of whom pledged their lives for Islam. It became a symbol of sacrifice, steadfastness, and the triumph of truth over oppression.
