Hazrat Zainab bint Jahsh (RA) was the seventh wife of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). She was a cousin of the Prophet (SAW), as her mother Umaymah bint Abdul Muttalib was the Prophet’s paternal aunt. Her marriage to the Prophet (SAW) is one of the most significant events in Islamic history because it was commanded by Allah through a direct revelation in the Qur’an (Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 37).
Before marrying the Prophet (SAW), she was married to Zaid ibn Harithah (RA), the Prophet’s freed slave and adopted son. After their divorce, Allah commanded the Prophet (SAW) to marry her in order to break the pre-Islamic Arab tradition that treated adopted sons like biological sons. This event clarified the distinction between adopted and biological relationships in Islamic law.
Hazrat Zainab (RA) was known for her devotion, piety, and frequent worship. She would fast regularly and spend much of her time in prayer. Among the "Mothers of the Believers," she was especially respected for her humility and charity. She passed away during the caliphate of Hazrat Umar (RA).
