The revelation of the Holy Qur’an is one of the most significant events in Islamic history. It began in 610 AD, when Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was 40 years old and meditating in the Cave of Hira near Makkah. The Angel Jibreel (Gabriel, A.S.) appeared and delivered the first verses from Surah Al-‘Alaq (96:1-5), commanding the Prophet to “Read in the name of your Lord”. This marked the beginning of the Qur’anic revelation.
The Qur’an was not revealed all at once but rather gradually over 23 years. This gradual process allowed the early Muslims to memorize, understand, and implement the teachings in their daily lives. It also provided guidance and solutions to real-life situations faced by the Prophet (SAW) and his companions.
The revelation continued throughout the Prophet’s life until 632 AD, the year of his death. The last revealed verse is believed by many scholars to be from Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:3), which declares the perfection of religion:
“This day I have perfected for you your religion, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.”
Key Facts:
Start of revelation: 610 AD (Cave of Hira, first verses of Surah Al-‘Alaq)
End of revelation: 632 AD (the year Prophet Muhammad SAW passed away)
Total duration: 23 years (13 years in Makkah, 10 years in Madinah)
Reason for gradual revelation: To strengthen the faith of believers, provide timely guidance, and make memorization easier.
