The original name of Iblis before his disobedience to Allah (SWT) was Azazil. He was a devout and pious jinn who lived among the angels due to his extensive worship and obedience. Though he was not an angel by creation — as angels are made from light and jinn from smokeless fire — Azazil was given a high status and placed in the company of the angels due to his devotion.

However, when Allah created Hazrat Adam (A.S) and commanded all to prostrate in respect (not worship), Azazil refused out of arrogance and pride. He considered himself superior because he was created from fire, whereas Adam (A.S) was created from clay. This act of disobedience marked the turning point in his identity — from Azazil to Iblis — and he was cast out of divine mercy.

This change reflects the Islamic teaching that no matter how pious one may appear, pride and arrogance can lead to downfall. The story of Iblis is mentioned in several places in the Qur’an, including Surah Al-Baqarah (2:34), Surah Al-A’raf (7:11–18), and Surah Sad (38:71–85).
