The 3rd year after Hijrah was a highly significant period in Islamic military history, marked by several important Ghazwat (battles/expeditions) led by Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). During this year, the Muslim community in Madinah faced numerous challenges from Quraysh and surrounding tribes who were attempting to weaken Islam.
Battle of Uhud (غزوة أحد):
Fought in Shawwal, 3 AH.
The Quraysh, seeking revenge for their defeat at Badr, gathered a large army and attacked Muslims at Mount Uhud. Initially, Muslims gained an advantage, but due to some archers leaving their assigned positions, Quraysh regrouped and inflicted heavy losses. Around 70 Muslims were martyred, including Hazrat Hamza (RA).
Battle of Hamra al-Asad (غزوة حمراء الأسد):
Occurred right after Uhud.
The Prophet (ﷺ) quickly reorganized his companions and pursued Quraysh to show strength, preventing them from attacking Madinah again.
Expedition of Banu Nadir (غزوة بني النضير):
The Jewish tribe of Banu Nadir broke their peace treaty by conspiring with Quraysh. The Prophet (ﷺ) laid siege to their fortresses, and they were eventually expelled from Madinah.
Ghazwah of Ghatfan (غزوة غطفان):
The Ghatfan tribe, allied with Quraysh, threatened Madinah. The Muslims confronted them, but no major fighting occurred as the enemy retreated.
Ghazwah Salim:
Another smaller expedition of 3 AH, carried out to safeguard Muslims against tribal threats around Madinah.
It was a year of severe trials and lessons for Muslims, especially after the setback at Uhud.
Despite difficulties, the Prophet (ﷺ) maintained strong leadership and ensured the survival and resilience of the Muslim community.
These events highlighted the necessity of discipline, unity, and obedience to the Prophet (ﷺ).
Thus, all the mentioned Ghazwat — Uhud, Hamra al-Asad, Banu Nuzair, Salim, and Ghatfan — took place in the 3rd Hijrah year.
