The compilation of the Holy Qur’an into a single written manuscript was initiated during the Caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakar (R.A) on the recommendation of Hazrat Umar ibn Al-Khattab (R.A). The need for this compilation arose after the Battle of Yamamah, where many Huffaz (memorizers of the Qur’an) were martyred. Hazrat Umar (R.A) feared that if more Huffaz were lost in future battles, portions of the Qur’an might be forgotten or lost.
He approached Hazrat Abu Bakar (R.A) with this concern and suggested collecting the Qur’an in a single written form. Initially, Hazrat Abu Bakar (R.A) was hesitant, as the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had not compiled it into a book during his lifetime. However, realizing the importance of preserving the Qur’an, he agreed.
The task was entrusted to Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (R.A), one of the chief scribes of revelation during the Prophet’s time. Zaid compiled the Qur’an by collecting written verses from parchments, bones, palm leaves, and from the hearts of those who had memorized it. This monumental effort ensured that the Qur’an was preserved accurately for future generations.
Hazrat Umar (R.A) requested Abu Bakar (R.A) to compile the Qur’an.
The suggestion came after the Battle of Yamamah, due to loss of Huffaz.
Zaid bin Thabit (R.A) was chosen as the chief compiler.
Compilation was based on written materials and memorization.
Preserved in the Caliph Abu Bakar’s era and later standardized under Caliph Usman (R.A).
Ensured the authentic preservation of the Holy Qur’an for all time.
