The Battle of Zallaqa (also known as the Battle of Sagrajas) took place on 23 October 1086 CE (479 AH) near Badajoz in present-day Spain. This decisive battle was fought between the Christian forces of Alfonso VI, King of León and Castile, and the Muslim forces led by Yusuf bin Tashfeen, the ruler of the Almoravid dynasty of North Africa.
The Christian armies had been expanding aggressively into Muslim-ruled Al-Andalus, threatening the survival of Islamic kingdoms in Spain. The Muslim rulers of Seville and other Taifas called for help from Yusuf bin Tashfeen, a powerful and pious leader known for his military skills and strict adherence to Islam.
Yusuf responded and crossed into Al-Andalus with a large army. The battle resulted in a major Muslim victory, halting the advance of Christian forces and preserving Muslim rule in Spain for several more decades. The defeat inflicted heavy casualties on Alfonso VI’s army and restored confidence among the Muslim population of Iberia.
